What does Homeopathy treat?

A homeopath does not treat ‘diseases’ as such but rather views all the symptoms as an expression of a central disturbance or a disharmony in the whole person. These symptoms can be labelled as certain conditions such as ‘asthma’ or ‘migraine’ but with homeopathy each patient will require a remedy based on a much larger totality than simply the name of the disease. Over the years homeopathy has successfully treated a wide range of health problems including: migraine, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, skin disorders (such as eczema, warts, herpes etc,) female disorders, infertility, depression, anxiety attacks etc.

Can you give an example of how a homeopath would treat someone with a fever?

A careful investigation is conducted that includes:

  • Possible causation (such as getting wet)
  • Speed of onset of symptoms
  • Time of day or night that the symptoms are worse
  • Changes in mood or temperament of the patient
  • Dreams
  • Changes in thirst or appetite - especially strong desires for food or drink not normally desired
  • Colour and coating of the tongue
  • Temperature of the parts of the body
  • Perspiration - location and type
  • Any unusual or unexpected/unrelated symptoms, such as fever with heat on only one side of the body. Homeopaths call these symptoms ‘strange, rare or peculiar’ and they are of special value in selecting the best possible remedy.

Can you give an example of treating an acute cough?

Recently a seven year old child was brought by her mother for a cough that was not responding to her usually effective remedies such as Belladonna or Pulsatilla. It was discovered that the cough started after playing football bare-foot on wet grass. An examination of her tongue showed it to be strangely only coated on the left side - the right side being clean. She had an increased desire to drink cold milk, which was unusual for her. This group of symptoms is only covered by the remedy Rhus Tox (Poison Oak) and after one dose of Rhus Tox 200 she was her old self by the next day.

What about long lasting or chronic complaints?

Of course chronic disease takes time to develop and requires more time to treat. However, once the correct remedy is found some improvement is usually quickly noticed. The length of time to effect a lasting cure obviously varies according to a number of factors included the age, constitution and vitality of the patient.
